How I Ship Prints and DrawingsBoth limited-edition Giclee prints, block prints, and drawings are shipped in the same fashion.
The work is placed within a clear sleeve, with the Certificate of Authenticity included, behind the print. The work, in its sleeve, is inside a standard document mailing tube. The mailing tube, in turn, is very snugly enclosed in a double-walled cardboard box. The end-caps are cardboard squares, taped on so that they may be easily removed, uncovering the plastic end-cap of the mailing tube. This is removed, to take out the work. I believe that such a package is at least 250 lb test. I weigh 240 pounds, and have stood on these packages, with no noticeable damage to them. I have recieved very good feedback from customers about this way of packaging prints for shipping. |
How I Ship PaintingsPaintings are shipped as follows:
The painting is shipped framed. I make my own frames, and I consider the frame to be an integral part of the work. My frames are designed to orchestrate the transition from image-space to real space in a particular way. The painting surface is covered with acid-free light-weight paper, and this is covered with clear plastic. The painting is then sandwiched between two 3"-thick foam pads. A thinner foam strip is then run around the outside of the frame, and all foam is then taped in place. Reinforcing cardboard is folded around the corners, on top of the outer foam strip. All of the above components are taped in place. This assembly is then enclosed in a double-walled cardboard box, cut to fit snugly. Appropriately emphatic wording is placed on all visible exterior surfaces, regarding the fragility of the contents. The standard price for this packaging work is $30 US. The painting is shipped DHL/Airborne Express, as I have had the best experience with their handling of fragile objects. |
